Arnica montana / Mountain Arnica / Seeds

A well-knownmedicinal plant and lovely daisy-like plant for the garden.  Arnica grows a rosette of leaves and tallflower spikes of yellow flowers from June to August.  Plants grow to about 75cm in height and lookgreat in the middle of borders and in herb gardens.  Arnica has beenused for centuries as a medicinal plant, with preparations made from freshflowers in summer and from the rhizomes in autumn.  Parts of the plant are considered toxic andshould not be used internally.

Arnica is analpine plant from central Europe and grows best in moist, well drained acidicsoil in full sun.

Conditions  Grow in full sun in moist but well-drainedacidic soil

Sow in spring or autumn.  Sow to a depth of 1mm in moist seedcompost.  Keep at 12-20C and germinationtakes 3-4 weeks, sometimes longer.   Pot up and grow on until ready to plant outinto the garden after the last frost.  Seedlingsgrow slowly at first.  Protect autumnseedlings in a greenhouse over winter. Do not fertilise, as these plants come from mountainous areas withnaturally poor soils.


Once established these plants need littlemaintenance and will spread from undergrounds creepers.  Flowers and leaves die down in autumn, whenthey can be cleared up.
