Artemisia afra / African Wormwood / Medicinal Herb / Seeds

A great medicinal herbal plant from South Africa with decorative silver grey aromatic leaves.  The plant has a nice rounded shape growing 0.6m to 2m in height.  This is a useful evergreen plant to add colour to the garden in summer as well as out of season.  Creamy yellow flowers appear in mid to late summer.

African Wormwood likes sun and well drained soil. It looks good in a herbal garden, as a contrast in flower beds and as an attractive aromatic hedge.  The roots need mulching to protect against frost.

Pack of 50 small seeds.  Sow in spring or summer.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy to half hardy evergreen perennial
Flowers Mid to late summer
Height 60 - 200cm
Spread 100cm
Conditions  Grow in full sun and well-drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring to autumn on the surface of a tray of seed compost.  Do not exclude light which is needed for germination.  Keep at 15 - 18C and germination takes 3-4 weeks.  Pot on when the seedlings are big enough to handle and plant in the garden in frost free conditions.  Protect summer/autumn sowings in a greenhouse or cold frame over the first winter.

Grow

Grow in warmer gardens.  Prune mature plants heavily in winter.  African Wormwood grows well in pots with regular trimming.  Take cuttings in spring (softwood) and summer (semi-ripe) using the top 5 cm of non-flowering stems.
