An attractive first-year flowering perennial, with dark green leaves and masses of upward facing salmon-pink flowers from May to July/August.  The sturdy, spreading plants have an upright habit and grow to a height of 15-20cm. They look great in the front of borders, and in gravel gardens, rockeries and pots.

Dianthus ‘Shrimp’ prefers a sunny position in free draining soil.

Sow

Sow in early spring for first year flowers, and into late summer for next year flowering.  Sow in moist seed compost, with a light covering of compost.   Keep at 16 – 21°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Pot on when seedlings are big enough to handle and plant out after the last frost.  Protect late summer seedlings over the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame, before planting out in the spring.

Grow Plants establish themselves during the summer and autumn and flower the following spring and summer.  Deadhead to prolong flowering.  Cut back lightly after first flowering to encourage a second flush of flowers.
