Echium russicum / Red Viper's Bugloss/ Seeds

A great border plant with pannicles of deep red flowers from June to August.  Plants form a rosette of hairy leaves in the first year and lots of flowers in the second, growing to a height of up to 1m.   Some plants will live on to be short-lived perennials.  A fantastic border plant that attracts pollinators and self-seeds freely.

Echium russicum prefers sun and fertile well drained soil.   Good for Mediterranean gardens.

Pack of 15 seeds.  Sow in spring/summer for flowering the next year.  Easy to grow.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Parts of the plant are a skin irritant.

Hardiness Hardy biennial / short lived perennial (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers June to August
Height 60 - 100cm
Spread 30 - 50m
Conditions  Full sun and well drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring/summer in moist seed compost at a depth of about 6mm.   Keep at around 20°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks.  Do not exclude light.  Plant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle, and out into the garden in early autumn or spring.  Seeds can be direct sown in cultivated soil in late spring/summer, but protect them from slugs and encroaching plants.  In colder gardens, protect the young plants in a cold frame or greenhouse in the 1st winter and plant out in spring, after hardening off.

Grow Plants are intolerant of winter wet, so grow in free draining soil or pots where you can control the moisture.  Protect young plants from slugs and snails.  Tidy up plants in autumn.  Some plants may die after flowering but many live on for several years in the right conditions.
