Gaura (Oenothera) lindheimeri ‘The Bride’ / Whirling Butterflies / Seeds

An increasingly popular border plant, with months of elegant white flowers from May to October, sitting on strong wiry stems.  Plants grow to a good of 90-120cm, and look at their best in borders, particularly in naturalistic and cottage gardens.  A good reliable plant, that tolerates drought once established.  These make good cut flowers.

Gaura does best in sun to part shade and in fertile well drained soil.

Pack of 30 seeds.  Sow January to middle summer.   Early sowings flower in the first year.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Height 90 - 120cm
Spread 50 - 60cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and fertile well-drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring to autumn.  Sow in trays of moist seed compost.  Cover lightly with seed compost and keep at around 20°C.  Seeds germinate in about 2-3 weeks, but some take longer, so do not discard the tray too quickly.  Transplant young seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden when frost-free.  Protect autumn seedlings in a greenhouse or cold frame over winter before planting out in the spring.

Grow Cut back after flowering.  Plants are hardy in most parts of the UK, but may not survive very cold winters. Cuttings can be taken from healthy mature plants – softwood cuttings in spring and semi-hardwood cuttings in summer.
