Lavender latifolia / Spike Lavender / Lavandula latifolia / Seeds

Spike Lavender is a highly aromatic sub-shrub with dark purple flowers in midsummer.  The spikes sit on tall stems, about 80cm in height, with broad silver/green leaves.  This is a very adaptable plant, good for edging and borders as well as pots and herb gardens.  The attractive aroma is used in essential oils.

Spike Lavender grows best in full sun and well-drained soil.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow in autumn/winter in a coldframe or unheated greenhouse or any time, preferably (but not essentially) following 2-4 weeks in a fridge. Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial
Flowers June to September
Height 30 - 80cm
Spread 30 - 45cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soil
Sow Sow in autumn/winter in a tray of seed compost and over-winter in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Seedlings emerge in early spring. Or sow anytime, and keep at 15-20C.  If there is no germination in 3-4 weeks, move to a fridge for 2-4 weeks and back again into the warmth.  Transplant to pots when seedlings are big enough  to handle and into the garden after the last frost in a sunny position.
Grow Plants need little care once established.  Trim plants after flowering.  Do not cut into the woody parts of the plant,as stems may not regrow.  Plants are not generally troubled by pests and diseases. Semi-ripe cuttings can be done in summer.
