Mina lobata 'Exotic Love' or Ipomoae lobata / Spanish Flag / Climber / Seeds

Mina lobata is an exotic-looking and fast growing climber. It has spires of showy flowers, starting out a brilliant red and fading into a pale yellow.  These are great from mid to late summer colour, flowering from July to the first frost.   Plants can be grown in the garden and in containers, and cover a wall or trellis in a season.  Plants can be grown in hanging baskets if the growing tips are pinched out while the plants are young.  Grow with the climber Thunbergia alata with hot Gazanias at the base for a great later summer display.

Mina lobata grows best in full to part sun and rich well-drained soil.  Keep plants well fed, but switch from a nitrogen-based feed to a phosphate-based feed before flowering.  Plants can be grown in a heated conservatory to extend flowering into winter.

Pack of 30 seeds.  Sow in mid spring to early summer, either indoors or directly in the ground/containers.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half-hardy short-lived perennial climber, generally grown as an annual in the UK
Flowers July to the first frost
Height 1.5 - 2m
Spread About 1m
Conditions  Plant out in full sun and rich and moist well-drained soil - protect from frost
Sow Sow indoors in mid to late spring in small pots of compost.  Sow 2-3 seeds per pot, about 5mm deep.  Soaking the seeds overnight in cold water before sowing may enhance germination.  Keep the pots at 20-25°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Transplant seedlings into larger pots and then out into the garden after the last frost.  Or sow outdoors directly into the garden or into containers in early summer after the last frost.
Grow Provide plants with support, such as a trellis or obelisk, and they climb to a height of about 2m and spread out about 1m.  It is best to use several plants to cover an area, spacing 10-20cm apart. Pinch out the growing tips of established seedlings only if you want to grow them in hanging baskets.  Remove plants at the end of the season.  Plants can be kept a few years if protected in a heated greenhouse over winter.
