Onixotis stricta or Wurmbea stricta / Greater Waterphlox / Seeds

A lovely and unusual plant for a moist or pond-side location.  Onixotis comes from southern Africa and has reed-like stems and spikes of pink and white star-like flowers in spring.  Grows 40-60cm in height.

Greater Waterphlox needs a sunny spot.  Likes moist conditions and can tolerate up to 5mm of water above the soil. The plant grows during the winter, flowers in the spring and then needs to dry out later in summer.  Onixitis can tolerate light frosts, otherwise protect over winter.

Pack of 15 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half-hardy perennial (forms corms)
Flowers Spring
Height 40 - 60cm
Spread 20cm
Conditions  Full sun damp soil during flowering
Sow

Sow in spring to autumn in a deep seed tray in an equal mix of sieved compost and horticultural sand.  Cover lightly with sand.  Germination needs warm days and cool nights (23-27 degrees Celcius) and takes 6-8 weeks, sometimes longer.  Transplant to pots when the seedlings can be handled.  Grow on for two years and plant out after the last frost.  Flowering generally starts in the third season.

Grow

Plants tolerate light frost, otherwise protect the plants over winter. The corms need to dry out in summer after flowering, when the flowers and leaves die down, before starting growth again in the autumn/winter.  Plants can be grown in pots, kept in standing water during flowering. Plants can be reproduced from offsets, which can be removed from mature corms and replanted during the dormant period in summer to a depth of 3-4cm.
