Pelargonium capitatum / Rose-Scented Pelargonium / Seeds

A sprawling evergreen perennial Pelargonium, with lovely rose-scented velvety leaves and dense heads of rose pink flowers from June into late summer.  These plants are cultivated for their wonderful rose-scented oil and are good border and container plants in the UK.  They sprawl nicely over the ground and from hanging baskets.  Rose-scented Pelargoniums grow to a height of 30-60cm.

The plants do best in a sunny position in well drained soil. They tolerate shorts periods of frost down to about -5C, but generally need protecting in the UK over the winter. They grow well in containers, and plants can be pruned back after flowering.  This Pelargonium tolerates coastal sites.

Pack of 15 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half hardy sprawling evergreen perennial (RHS Hardiness H1c)
Flowers June to late summer
Height 30-60cm
Spread 60-90cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring to autumn 2-3mm deep in moist seed compost.  Include coarse sand or grit in the seed compost. Scarifying the seeds before sowing (gently chip with a scalpel) may improve germination. Germination takes 2-4 weeks at a constant 20-24C. Autumn sowings need protecting in a greenhouse or conservatory over winter, and flower earlier than spring sowings.  Plant out after the last frost into pots, baskets or in the garden.

Grow

Plants grow well once established.  Feed and water pot grown pots regularly during the growing season.  Deadhead to prolong flowering.  Plants can be removed in the autumn or taken indoors and protected over winter against frost, in which case, they live for many years. If kept over winter, trim back plants in autumn.  Softwood cuttings can be taken in spring/early summer and often flower in the same year.
