Pepper 'Jalapeno M'  / Hot Pepper / Seeds

Jalapeno M is very popular hot and pungent chilli pepper, widely used in Mexican cooking.  Plants are compact and sturdy and produce a heavy continuous crop of bullet shaped fruits, ripening first to dark green and then to red.  They can be picked and eaten at the green or red stage.  The fruits are about 9cm x 4m in size with thick fleshy walls.  The "M in the name indicates a milder average-heat chilli with a Scoville rating of 5,000. 

Jalapeno peppers grow and ripen best in long hot summers or in a greenhouse. Each plant grows to a height of about 60-70cm and will start to produce fruits 70-75 days from germination.

Conditions  Full sun and rich, moist, well drained soil

Sow in early spring (January to April) in a heated propagator or warm windowsill. Sow in moist seed compost and cover lightly with vermiculite or seed compost.   Keep at around 25C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Transfer seedlings to pots when big enough to handle and then into the final position after the last frost.   Do not grow Chillies in the same soil one year to the next.

Grow & Harvest

Keep the plants in a warm sunny place.  Feed plants with an organic tomato feed once flowering starts.  Peppers start to ripen 70-75 days from germination, from green to red, to be picked from June to December.   Snip the peppers from the plant with a knife or scissors.  Protect plants from aphids and spider mites.  Discard the plants at the end of the growing season.
