Podalyria calyprata / Sweet Pea Bush / Seeds

A crowd-pleasing shrub producing lovely large scented lilac/pink Sweet Pea-like flowers in spring.  This shrub has grey-green leaves and grows to a sturdy height of 2-3m. Early growth can be cut back to create a rounded shrub or the plant can be trained into the shape of a small tree, well suited to a small garden.

The Sweet Pea Bush likes a sunny spot in well drained composted acidic soil.  It does not do well in alkaline soils.  Keep well watered, as it grows naturally in damp spots in the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa.  Grow in warm gardens and protect against frosts greater than -7C with mulch around the roots.  Good for Mediterranean gardens.

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Height 2 - 3m

Sow Sow in spring to summer.  Soak the seeds in warm water until it cools and then sow in a tray of seed compost, lightly covering with compost.  Keep at 22-25C and germination takes 2 to 4 weeks.  Transplant young seedlings into pots before they reach the four-leaf stage (to avoid root disturbance) then plant out after the last frost.  Pinch out young growth for a rounded shape.

Grow in warm gardens and protect from hard frosts with a fleece jacket and/or mulching around the roots.  Plants are evergreen.  Trim lightly after flowering if necessary to maintain a good shape. Plants can be grown in large pots and kept in a conservatory over winter.
