Stachys officinalis / Betony / Seeds

A wonderful herb, with masses of attractive reddish purple flowers from June right to the end of summer.  Plants grow to a height of about 30cm and look great in herb gardens, pots or borders.  Betony attracts lots of pollinating insects.

Betony grows best in full sun and well-drained soil.  It can be grown as a medicinal plant and the young leaves make a good herbal tea.

Pack of approx 300 seeds.  Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  A period of cold treatment is not essential but can improve germination either sow in autumn/winter or place in a fridge for two weeks.   Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers June to the first frost
Height 60cm
Spread 30-50cm
Conditions  Full sun to light shade and well-drained soil.
Sow Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  Sow in a tray of seed compost.  Cover the seeds very lightly with 1mm compost or vermiculite and do not exclude light, which is needed for germination.  Keep at around 21C and seedlings emerge in 2-4 weeks.  If germination is poor, move the seed tray to a fridge for two weeks and then back out to 21C.   Pot on and grow until the plants are ready to plant out after the last frost in sun and rich well drained soil.   Protect autumn sowings over winter in a coldframe or greenhouse, before planting out in spring.
Grow Plants need little care once established.  Tidy up dead flower stalks and untidy leaves after flowering or in autumn.  Plants are semi-evergreen in warmer gardens/winters and die back in colder winters/gardens, re-growing again in the spring.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
