Thymus mastichina / Spanish Thyme/ Mastic Thyme / Seeds

Mastic Thyme is a tasty culinary herb from the mountainous areas of Spain and Portugal.  It is an attractive plant with small green leaves and masses of fluffy white flowers in midsummer, typically from June to August.  Plants look great in dry or Mediterranean gardens, herb gardens, as edging and in pots.  They attract pollinators. The leaves are used for seasoning food, and for extracting essential oils.

Mastic Thyme grows best in a sunny spot and well drained soil, growing to a height of 30-40cm.  Plants are hardy to about -10°C but need good drainage to survive a UK winter.

Pack of approx 100 small seeds.  Sow in spring or autumn, with autumn sowings needing protection in a greenhouse over winter.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packed.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen herb / sub-shrub
Flowers June to August
Height 30 - 40cm
Spread 600cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soils
Sow Sow in spring or autumn on the top of moist compost and do not cover with compost, as light is needed for germination.  Cover with a clear plastic bag or lid (and remove after germination).  Keep at 15-20°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks.  Pot on and grow until seedlings are ready to plant out into the garden.  Pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushiness and then plant out after the last frost in a sunny spot.  Protect autumn seedlings in a greenhouse or cold frame over winter.
Grow Plants need little attention once established.   They can be trimmed back lightly after flowering to keep tidy.  Cuttings take well in summer.
