Tritonia disticha / Seeds

An unusually hardy summer growing Tritonia from the Cape Floral Kingdom, with bright pink flowers from July to September.  Plants grow to a good height of 50-80cm with the flowers suspended on wiry stems.  They look striking growing in groups in a border or in pots, and alongside Dierama and ornamental grasses.  Their wiry stems wave around appealingly in the wind.

Tritonia prefer sun and well-drained soil.  This species is hardy and can stay in the soil over winter if not too moist.  Or the corms can be lifted in late autumn when flowering is finished, stored in a cool dry place and replanted in spring.

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow in spring or autumn.  Flowering starts in the second or third season.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.   These seeds are harvested from plants grown in Cornwall.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial (forms corms) (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers July to September
Height 50 - 80cm
Spread 10 - 20cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soils
Sow Sow the seeds in spring or autumn.  Sow the seeds into a tray or small pots of compost.  Cover lightly with compost and keep at a cool 12-15°C.  Germination takes 3-4 weeks.  Pot on the seedlings and plant out in the second season.
Grow Plants grow underground corms and start to flower in the second or third season when the corms are mature.  The leaves die back in the autumn after flowering, when they can be tidied up.  In colder gardens or poorly drained soil, lift the corms in autumn and store in a cool dry place before planting out again in the spring.  Offsets can be removed in autumn and grown into new plants.
