Wahlenbergia undulata / African Bluebell / Seeds

A dramatic summer display of sky blue flowers, growing on delicate flower stalks to a height of 20-40cm.  These plants flower for a month or more from mid summer into the autumn.  They generally flower in the first year.

African Bluebells prefer sun or semi-shade and composted, well-drained soil.  They look good in bedding or mixed borders, and particularly in rockeries or wall edges where the plant will trail nicely.  They look particularly good in Mediterranean gardens.  Protect from frost with a mulch over winter or grow as an annual.

Pack of 50 small seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the label.

Hardiness Hardy to half hardy perennial, which can be grown as an annual
Flowers July to September
Height 20 - 40cm
Spread 10 - 20cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and composted well-drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring to autumn in a tray of seed compost.  Sow sparingly and cover these small seeds with a light covering of compost. Keep in the light (not direct sunshine) at 15-20C and germination takes 2-4 weeks.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and fertilize to encourage growth.  Seedlings grow slowly at first.  Plant out after the last frost.

Grow

Plants grow better and look better in the garden than in pots.  Trim back plants in the autumn after they have finished flowering.  Plants die back and go dormant in winter and start growing again in spring.  Cover the plants with a mulch in winter to encourage survival.  Plants live for a few years.
