Asparagus densiflorus 'Cwebe' / Asparagus Fern / Seeds

A graceful and upright Asparagus Fern from the Cape Floral Kingdom in South Africa.  It has long arching 50cm stems of dark green needle-like evergreen leaves.  Small white to pink flowers come out in midsummer and turn to ornamental bright red berries later in the autumn.  Young fronds are an attractive copper colour.

The Cwebe Asparagus Fern prefers light shade and rich well watered soil.  It is half hardy and needs to be protected against frosts greater than -4°C to -7°C. It makes an attractive pot/conservatory plant as well as a summer garden plant.  The fronds are good in flower arrangements.

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Height 50cm

Sow in spring to autumn.  Soak the seeds overnight in warm water and scarify (lightly scratch) the seeds before sowing to aid germination.  Then sow in a deep seed tray or modules in damp seed compost.  Keep at 15- 20°C and germination takes 3-4 weeks (sometimes up to 10 weeks).  Pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle and plant into pots or outside after the last frost.

Water well during the summer, reducing during winter.   Keep in light shade and protect from hard frosts.  Mist indoor plants regularly (eg daily).  Fertilize pot grown plants every three months, and repot as they grow. Remove dead stems as necessary.
