Basil / British Basil / Robust tasty leaves / Seeds

One of the best Basils for growing outdoors in UK conditions.  British Basil has very robust bright green leaves that are more resistant to our colder conditions.   Plants retain their traditional intense flavour, and leaves are good for adding to salads, sauces and pizzas.  Plants have an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

This variety is particularly suitable for growing outside in the summer.  Leaves can be picked throughout summer from June/July into autumn.

Pack of approx 500 seeds.  Sow indoors in spring, or directly in the ground from late May to June.  Easy to grow.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Hardiness Half hardy annual
Height 30cm
Spread 20cm
Conditions  Sun and moist well-drained soil, protected from frost, although plants may tolerate a light frost
Sow

Sow indoors in spring: Sow on the surface of moist seed compost in trays or pots.  Cover very lightly with compost or vermiculite, and keep at 15-25C. Germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Water sparingly and give the plants good light before planting out after the last frost.   Sow outdoors in early summer: Sow late May and June after the last frost directly in the soil in rows , and thin to 20-30cm apart.  Seeds can be direct sown into outside containers.  Sow in a sunny place with well-drained soil.

Grow & Harvest

Once plants are established, pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushy plants. Harvest leaves regularly and remove flowering stems to retain flavour and prevent bolting.  Water plants during dry spells.  Outdoor plants die down in the autumn when they can be removed.   Excess leaves can be frozen.
