Basil Large Leaf Sweet / Italian Basil / Seeds

A large leaved variety of Basil with bright green leaves, a sweet taste, a smooth texture and pleasing aroma.   Plants have an upright, well branched habit, growing to a height of about 50cm.  Sweet Italian Basil is typical of Italian cooking, and leaves are good for adding to salads, sauces and pizzas.

Sweet Italian Basil is good for growing all year indoors in pots and for growing outside in the summer.  Leaves can be picked all year while plants are growing.

Pack of approx 2000 seeds.  Sow indoors all year and grow on a sunny windowsill, or directly in the ground from late May to June.  Easy to grow.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Sow

For indoor cultivation: Sow year-round on the surface of moist seed compost in trays or pots.  Cover very lightly with compost or vermiculite, and keep at 15-25°C.  Germination takes 2-3 weeks.   Water sparingly and give the plants good light.
For outdoor cultivation: Sow late May and June after the last frost directly in the soil in rows, and thin to 20-30cm apart.  Sow in a sunny place with well-drained soil.

Grow & Harvest

Once plants are established, pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushy plants. Harvest leaves regularly and remove flowering stems to retain flavour and prevent bolting.  Water plants during dry spells.  Outdoor plants die down in the autumn when they can be removed.   Grow indoor plants all year on a sunny windowsill.  Sow 2-4 seeds per medium sized pot.  Make sure the pot has drainage holes and do not over water plants.  Feed pot grown plants once a month. Expect pot grown indoor plants to provide leaves for 3-6 months, after which they should be replaced.  Sow regularly for a continuous supply of leaves.  Excess leaves can be frozen.
