Broccoli 'Summer Purple' / Purple Sprouting Broccoli / British Bred / Seeds

A great new British-bred variety developed for summer cropping in the UK.  These are high yielding plants, with large sturdy frames, producing tender stalks from mid to late summer.  Plants do not need winter chill to produce spears and can withstand summer heat.

Broccoli grows best in full sun and rich well cultivated soil.  Plants need protecting from birds and insects with netting.

Pack of approx 100 seeds.  Sow directly in the soil outside in the spring to early summer from late March to end June.   Or start earlier indoors from February.  The spears are harvested 12-16 weeks from sowing.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Hardiness Hardy biennial
Height 90cm
Spread 60cm
Conditions  Full sun and rich well cultivated soil.

Sow in batches directly into 10mm deep drills of cultivated soil.  Cover in insect-proof netting.  Thin the seedlings to 30-45cm apart.   Seeds can be started earlier indoors or in outside seed beds, and transplanted to the final growing position when seedlings are about 10cm in size.  Treat acidic soils with lime before sowing to help prevent club root.

Grow & Harvest

Water plants regularly during dry spells.  Maintain netting to ward off birds and insects. Look out for and remove any caterpillars on the leaves.  Harvest the shoots when about 15cm tall and before they flower, 12-16 weeks from sowing. Cut the central stem first and then the side shoots regularly as they grow.  Each plant can be harvested for 4-6 weeks, when it should be removed.
