Dierama trichorhizum / Fairy Wand Flower / Seeds

A dainty Dierama from the highlands of South Africa, well adapted to cool UK gardens.  This is a beautiful plant producing five pale mauve to light purple flowers on each spike from June/July to September.   Plants grow 30-60cm in height.

Dierama trichorhizum likes sunny and moist (or well watered) conditions.  It looks good grouped in borders or rock gardens.  .

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow anytime, at room temperature and in diffuse light.  Germination takes 1-3 months and can be erratic so sow more than you need.  Plants generally start flowering in the third season.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial (forms corms) (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers June/July to September
Height 30 - 60cm
Spread 15 - 20cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and rich well-drained soil.
Sow

Sow on the surface of a tray of moist seed compost.   Press seeds gently into the compost and do not cover.  Keep in diffuse light at 15-20°C and germination starts in about four weeks and continues erratically up to about three months. Protect late summer and autumn seedlings in a greenhouse over winter before planting out in the spring.   Do not let plants in pots dry out and plant out into the garden as soon as they are ready.

Grow Plants take 2-3 years to establish themselves and then need little attention.  They are evergreen, generally keeping some leaves over winter.  Tidy up dead leaves in spring.  Apply fertilizer in spring and water during dry summer spells.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring or after flowering in autumn, after which they may skip a season of flowers as they re-establish themselves.  Avoid growing plants in pots long term as it is not their preferred environment.
