Echinacea purpurea ‘Lustre Hybrids’ / Coneflower / Seeds

A great mix of cone flowers, with masses of flowers in shades of red, pink, cream and white.  Flowers sit on sturdy stems, up to a height of about 1m and flowers appear in June/July to September.  These are wonderful plants for late summer colour, making good border plants and cut flowers.  Plants attract pollinators.

 

Cone flowers grow well in sun to light shade in a rich well drained soil.  Keep well watered during the summer.

 

Pack of 30 seeds.  Sow in early spring to autumn.  Plants flower in the first season from early spring sowing.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Sun to light shade and rich well-drained soil.
Sow

Sow anytime, generally spring to autumn.  Sow by March for 1st year flowers.  Sow the seeds in moist seed compost and cover very lightly with compost or vermiculite.  Keep at about 18°C in the light and germination will take 2-3 weeks.  If the tray is in a heated propagator, switch this off at night.  Transfer seedlings to pots when they are big enough to handle and then out into the garden after hardening off.

Grow Protect young plants from slugs and snails.  Once established, these plants are easy to look after.  They flower in the first or second season.  Deadhead during flowering.  Plants die back in autumn – clear away the dead material in winter to early spring. Plants grow back in spring.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring or autumn and root cuttings can be taken in winter.
