A heavily perfumed Gardenia from the Cape Floral Kingdom in South Africa, first introduced here in the UK by Kew in 1773. White Gardenia is a small flowering evergreen shrub or small tree. It grows 2m-5m in height and has very showy large white perfumed flowers (at night) in mid to late summer. The flowers turn into attractive woody fruits.
White Gardenia is easy to grow and look after, but takes some time to reach a mature height and produce a full display of flowers. It makes a good bonsai subject. Best to grow in sun or part shade, and protect from all but the lightest frost – it will grow well in a big pot which can be moved into a conservatory, greenhouse or protected area over winter.
