Kniphofia citrina / Yellow Red Hot Poker / Seeds

An unusual form of Red Hot Poker with yellow to lime-green torch-shaped flowers from June to September.  Plants have blue-green grass-like leaves and grow to a height of 60-90cm. They grow well in rockeries, borders and Mediterranean gardens.  They are drought tolerant and grow well in containers.

Kniphofia citrina prefers a sunny to part shady site with humus-rich well drained soil.  They are hardy to about -10°C and survive winter best in well drained soils.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow anytime, typically spring into summer.  Germination is erratic over several months.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial (forms rhizomes) (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers June to September
Height 60 - 90cm
Spread 40 - 20cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and humus-rich well drained soil
Sow

Sow anytime, typically spring into summer.  Cover the seeds lightly with compost and keep at 20°C.  Seeds start to germinate in a few weeks and some may continue to germinate erratically for several weeks thereafter, so do not discard the seed tray too quickly.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are large enough to handle and then out into the garden or pots in a well drained sunny or part shady spot.  Protect summer/autumn sowings in the first winter in a greenhouse or cold frame before planting out in spring.

Grow Plants may take some time to flower from seed –some within a couple of years and others longer.  Protect new growth from slugs and snails.  Water plants during dry spells in the summer.  Cut back faded flower stalks to the base of the plant.  Remove any untidy leavds in spring.  Mature clumps of rhizomes can be divided in spring.
