Kniphofia galpinii / Dwarf Red Hot Poker / Seeds

An original dwarf species of Kniphofia from Southern Africa, making a very attractive garden plant and a good pot plant for the patio.  Plants have narrow grass-like leaves and spikes of soft orange flowers up 60cm in height in July up to November.  They grow well in rockeries, informal gardens and Mediterranean gardens.  These dainty plants deliver great late summer colour, and are good cut flowers.

Kniphofia galpinii prefers a sunny to part shady site with rich well drained soil.   They tolerate coastal gardens.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow anytime, typically spring into summer.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Sow

Sow anytime, typically spring into summer.  Cover the seeds lightly with compost and keep at 20°C.  Seeds start to germinate in a few weeks and some may continue to germinate erratically for several weeks thereafter, so do not discard the seed tray too quickly.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are large enough to handle and then out into the garden or pots in a well drained sunny or part shady spot.  Protect summer/autumn sowings in the first winter in a greenhouse or coldframe before planting out in spring.

Grow Plants may take some time to flower from seed –some within a couple of years and others longer.  Protect new growth from slugs and snails.  Water plants during dry spells in the summer.  Cut back faded flower stalks to the base of the plant.  Leaves die back naturally in winter, when they can be tidied up and re-grow again in spring.   Mature clumps of rhizomes can be divided in spring.
