Kniphofia hirsuta 'Traffic Lights' / Red Hot Poker / Seeds

A great compact form of Red Hot Poker, originally from the Cape Floral Kingdom in South Africa, which is hardy, and well suited to UK gardens. This plant produces spikes of red pokers with a green base from June through to September and provides good late colour in a border.  Also good in containers as this grows to a height of about 40cm.

Kniphofia ’Traffic Lights’ likes a sunny or part shady position and rich moist soil.  Water well during the summer and fertilise to get the best flowers.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow anytime.  Sowings done by December should deliver first year flowers by July.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial
Flowers June to September
Height 40cm
Spread 40cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and moist humus-rich well drained soil
Sow

Sow on the surface of a tray of seed compost and cover with 3-4 mm of seed compost or vermiculite.  Keep at 15-18°C.  Seedlings emerge from 2 weeks onwards.  Transplant to pots when seedlings are big enough and grow on in cooler conditions (suggested 15°C).  Plant out into the garden when frost-free in a sunny or part shaded position.

Grow Plants grow new leaves in spring, flower in summer and autumn and the leaves generally die back in winter.  Remove spent flowers to encourage more flowering.  Do not remove the dead leaves until spring, as they protect the crown of the plant from excess water/freezing during winter.  Or mulch the crowns of plants in winter to protect from hard frosts.
