Lallemantia canescens 'Blue Snap' / Dragon's Head / Seeds

An alpine or rock garden plant, originally from Iran, with spikes of blue/mauve flowers in midsummer that contrast well with aromatic blue/green leaves.  Lallemantia ‘Blue Snap’ has a dwarf compact form, growing to 20-25cm in height and good for pots, rock gardens and borders.

Lallemantia grows best in full sun and a well drained soil. Plants attract lots of pollinators into the garden.  It is a good substitute for invasive mint.

Pack of 30 seeds.
Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn. Early spring sowings deliver first year flowers.  Keep summer and autumn sowings in a cold frame or greenhouse over winter.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the label.

Hardiness Hardy herbaceous perennial
Flowers June to July/August
Height 20 - 25cm
Spread 15 - 20cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soil

Sow anytime, but generally spring to autumn, on the surface of a tray of seed compost and cover with 5mm of seed compost or vermiculite.  Keep at 18-20°C and seedlings emerge in 7-10 days.  Transplant seedlings to pots when they are big enough and grow.  Plant out into the garden when frost free in a sunny position and basic well drained soil, avoiding waterlogged soils in winter.

Grow Plants are quick to flower and will do so in the first year from early sowings.  Tidy up the plants after flowering.  They are short-lived perennials and will live for a few years before dying back naturally.   Softwood cuttings can be taken in late spring and early summer and mature clumps can be divided in spring or autumn.
