Lobostemon belliformis / 8-Day Healing Bush / Seeds

A rare and showy shrub with large and abundant tubular red flowers in spring.  This is a perennial shrub growing to a height of 1m to 1.5m.  These plants grow in a very restricted area near Cape Town and are closely related to the Northern hemisphere Echiums.

Lobostemon belliformis grows best in sandy well drained soils and needs protecting against hard frosts so grow in pots and move to a greenhouse/conservatory in winter or grow outside in the warmest parts of the UK. Plants are suitable for coastal areas and Mediterranean gardens.

Pack of 15 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Germination is improved with the use of Smoke Primer Solution.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.   These seeds come from cultivated plants in a botanic garden.

Sow Sow in spring to autumn.  Soak the seeds in hand-hot water for 12 hours, then in a smoke primer solution for 12 hours.  The smoke primer solution is recommended for optimal germination.  Then sow the seeds in a tray of compost, cover lightly with compost, and germination takes 1-3 weeks at 18 - 21C.   Pot on seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant out in the garden or into a container after the last frost.
Grow Protect the roots from hard frosts with mulch, or grow in a large pot and bring into a greenhouse/conservatory in winter.  Plants form a natural rounded shape they can be trimmed back lightly after flowering.  Older plants can become woody with fewer flowers these woodier stems can be cut back after flowering no more than a third of stems in one year.  Plants vary in how long they take to flower from seed.
