Lobostemon fruticosus / Pyjama Bush / Seeds

These are rare seeds of a very showy neat shrub called the Pyjama Bush.  It comes from the Cape Floral Kingdom in South Africa and has thin soft hairy leaves, growing to a rounded height of about 1m.  This plant produces a stunning display of blue and pink flowers in the spring to early summer, transforming the shrub into a blaze of colour.

The Pyjama Bush prefers a sunny well drained position.   It is adaptable and can be used in most places around the garden.  It looks good in a rockery.  Protect the roots from frost with mulch or grow in a pot and move into a greenhouse or conservatory in winter.  Plants tolerate windy and coastal gardens in Mediterranean areas.

Pack of 15 seeds. Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Sow Sow in spring to autumn.  Sow seeds in a tray of moist seed compost and cover lightly with compost.  Germination takes 1-3 weeks at 18 - 21°C.   Pot on seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant out in the garden after the last frost.  Protect autumn seedlings in a cold-frame or greenhouse over winter and plant out in the spring.  Plants grow best in warm sunny gardens.
Grow Protect the roots from hard frosts with mulch, or grow in large pots and bring into a greenhouse/conservatory in winter.  Plants normally form a natural rounded shape –they can be trimmed back lightly after flowering.  Older plants can become woody with few flowers – these woodier stems can be cut back to after flowering – no more than a third of stems in one year.  Some plants flower in the first year from early sowings.
