Spearmint is a strongly fragrant form of mint grown as a tea and culinary herb. It has distinctive square stems and tasty green leaves. Plants grow to a height of about 60cm and have attractive spikes of lavender-coloured flowers in mid to late summer. These plants are the source of Oil of Spearmint, widely used in food and beverages.
Spearmint grows best in sun to part shade and moist soils. It is a vigorous plant that spreads via underground stems, and it is best grown and contained in pots. The leaves and flowering tops can be picked any time during the growing season, and make a lovely tea. Plants die back in winter and start growing again in spring.
