Mentha spicata / Spearmint / Aromatic Culinary Herb & Herbal Tea / Seeds

Spearmint is a strongly fragrant form of mint grown as a tea and culinary herb.  It has distinctive square stems and tasty green leaves.  Plants grow to a height of about 60cm and have attractive spikes of lavender-coloured flowers in mid to late summer.  These plants are the source of Oil of Spearmint, widely used in food and beverages.


Spearmint grows best in sun to part shade and moist soils.  It is a vigorous plant that spreads via underground stems, and it is best grown and contained in pots.  The leaves and flowering tops can be picked any time during the growing season, and make a lovely tea.  Plants die back in winter and start growing again in spring.

Conditions  Sun to part shade and any soil, including clay, with a reasonable amount of water
Sow Sow in spring and summer.  Sow the small seeds sparingly onto the surface of moist seed compost in trays or pots.  Press the seeds gently into the compost.  Do not cover with compost, and keep at 15-20C.  Germination takes 2-4 weeks, but can be erratic and sometimes take longer, so do not discard the trays too quickly.  Pinch out the tips of established seedlings to encourage a bushier habit.  
Grow Harvest the leaves and flowering tops as you need them.  The leaves can be used fresh or dried for later use.  Plants will re-grow after cutting, until they die back in winter.  Plants can be divided in spring or autumn.  These are vigorous plants that need to be contained in most gardens.
