Onion 'Guardsman' F1 / Winter Hardy Salad Onion / Seeds

The most widely grown salad onion in the UK, Onion ‘Guardsman’ combines the mild flavour of a bunching onion with a strong root system and low bulbing qualities.  It is also resistant to botrytis and therefore good for autumn sowing as well as spring and summer sowing.   This variety has an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Onion ‘Guardsman’ grows best in rich well drained soil, with a regular supply of water.

Pack of 2g (approx 450) seeds.  Sow directly in the soil outside in the spring from February to June, for harvesting later in summer.  And sow in July to September for harvesting in the spring. Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Hardiness Hardy biennial
Height 40 - 50cm
Spread 5cm
Conditions  Rich well drained soil

For summer harvest: Sow seeds directly in the soil from February to June 1cm deep in rows 15-25m apart.  Thin to 2-5cm apart.  Keep moist and germination takes 2-4 weeks.  Regular water is needed to do well.  Sow every 3 weeks for a continuous harvest.  For spring harvest: Sow as above in July to September for a spring harvest.

Grow & Harvest

Harvest spring-sown salad onions about 10 weeks from sowing, generally July to September, while the leaves are still green and upright.  Harvest the autumn sown salad onions in the spring.  Autumn sown salad onions have bigger, stronger tasting bulbs.
