Penstemon barbatus 'Cambridge Mixture' / 1st Year Flowering / Seeds

A mix of compact Penstemon, with long lasting flowers in shades of pink, rose, blue and purple from June through to September.  Plants grow to a height of 30cm and are compact and well branched.  Perfect for front of borders, edges, rock gardens and pots.  Plants attract bees and butterflies.  Good cut flowers.

Penstemons grow best in sun and well drained, gritty soil.  Plants will grow in less well-drained soils but may not survive in colder gardens in winters.  Plants will grow in windy sites and are drought tolerant once established.  Trim back in the spring to maintain a good shape.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow in spring or autumn.  Early sowings will yield flowers in about 20 weeks.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy semi-evergreen perennial
Flowers June to September
Height 30cm
Spread 20 - 30cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring or late summer/autumn on the surface of moist and well drained seed compost. Press the seeds gently into the cost. Do not cover the seeds as light is needed for germination.  Germination takes 2-4 weeks at 15 - 18°C.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden after the last frost.  Protect young plants from slugs and snails.

Grow

Deadhead plants to prolong flowering.  Plants grow woody stems, with semi-evergreen or deciduous leaves.  Plants flower on new growth.  Trim plants every year in spring back to viable shoots.  Softwood cuttings can be taken in spring and early summer.
