Aquilegia vulgaris/ Common Columbine / Wildflower / Seeds

A lovely British wildflower and good garden plant, Common Columbine forms a neat clump of leaves in spring and tall sturdy flower spikes with ‘granny bonnet’ flowers in shades of blue in late spring from around May to June/July.  Plants grow to a height of about 50-80cm when in flower.  They look great in borders and less formal wildflower gardens.

Common Columbines grow best in sun to part shade and moist, free-draining soils.  They self-seed once established.

Pack of approx 400 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn. Germination is erratic so sow more seeds than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Flowers May to June/July
Height 60 - 80cm
Spread 20 - 30cm

Sow

Sow the seeds in spring to autumn into a tray of compost.  Cover the seeds very lightly with soil or vermiculite and keep at 15-20°C.   Do not exclude light.  Germination takes about 1-3 months and can be erratic.  If there is no germination, place the seed try in the fridge in a plastic bag for 3 weeks and then back into room temperature for germination.  Protect summer/autumn sowings in a greenhouse over the first winter. Or sow the seeds in autumn into trays of compost, with clear lids, and keep outside in a protected place for germination in spring.  Pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle.

Grow

Deadhead plants to encourage more flowers.  Cut back plants after flowering.  Plants will self-seed around the garden and you can control this by removing seedheads in summer.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
