Astrantia major 'Primadonna Deep Red' / Masterwort / Seeds

A very attractive variety of Astrantia with deep red to purple flowers from June to August.   These are good border plants, with strong upright stems, growing to a height of 60-80cm.  They make good cut and dried flowers.

Astrantia ‘Primadonna Deep Red’ grows best in sun to dappled shade and moist humus-rich soil.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow anytime, typically in autumn/winter in a cold frame, or spring to summer including 4-6 weeks in a fridge.  Experience of germinating hardy perennials is useful as germination can be erratic. Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy herbaceous perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers June to August
Height 60-80cm
Spread 30-50cm
Conditions  Grow in sun to part shade and most humus-rich soils
Sow

Sow October-February in moist seed compost, and overwinter in a coldframe or against an outside wall, with a clear glass cover.   This breaks seed dormancy.  Seeds germinate in the spring onwards, some taking several months.   Or sow March-September in a tray of seed compost (just cover with compost).  Keep at 18-22°C for 2-4 weeks.  Then place in the fridge for 4-6 weeks and then into 5-12°C until germination.  Pot on as seedlings emerge one by one and plant out after the last frost.

Grow

Cut back flower stalks once the flowers have faded to encourage more flowers.  Plants die back in autumn/winter, when any remaining flower stalks and dead leaves can be removed.  Plants re-grow strongly in spring, when mature clumps can be divided. Plants are sometimes affected by powdery mildew.
