Bergenia cordifolia 'Red Beauty'/ Elephant's Ears / Seeds

A sought-after Bergenia grown mostly for the fine year-round foliage and red early spring flowers.  Bergenia ‘Red Beauty’ has big evergreen glossy leaves and spikes of red flowers in early spring.  The green leaves are red-tinged in autumn and winter and add good winter colour to your garden.  Plants grow to a height of about 20cm (to about 60cm with flower spikes), useful for shady spots, path edging and front of borders.

This Bergenia likes both sun and shade and a moist compost-rich soil.  Plants tolerate boggy sites.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial
Flowers Early spring
Height 20cm (50 - 65cm with flowers)
Spread 40 - 60cm
Conditions  Grow in sun or part-shade and moist compost-rich soil.
Sow

Sow on the surface of moist seed compost and keep at 15 - 21°C.  Do not cover the seeds, as light is needed for germination.  Seeds germinate in about 4 weeks, sometimes longer.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and then out into the garden after the last frost.  Keep summer/autumn sowings in a cold frame or greenhouse before planting out in the spring.

Grow

These are evergreen plants and need little maintenance once established.  Trim back old flowerstems and remove untidy leaves when needed. Watch out for slugs and snails. Mature plants can be divided in late spring (after flowering) or autumn.
