Briza maxima / Greater Quaking Grass / Seeds

A lovely decorative grass with nodding spikes of pale green to creamy white flowers in summer, from June to August.  Plants grow to a height of about 50cm and seedheads shake in the breeze, adding movement and interest to the garden.  The flower spikes are good fresh and dried flowers.

Greater Quaking Grass grows best in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil.  The plants originate in the Mediterranean and have naturalised in the UK.

Pack of approx 300 seeds.  Sow directly into cultivated soil in the garden in spring and autumn.  Or sow the seeds indoors in spring.  Sowing instructions are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy annual grass (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers June to August
Height 40-50cm
Spread 30-40cm
Conditions  Grow in full sun to part shade and well-drained soils
Sow

Sow the seeds in spring or autumn directly into cultivated ground.  The seeds germinate once the soil warms up in spring.  Or sow the seeds in spring in cells of compost, keep at 15-20°C and seedlings emerge in 2-3 weeks, depending on the temperature.  Pot on and grow until the plants are ready for the garden, planting out in early summer.

Grow

This grass needs little maintenance once established and is generally untroubled by pests and diseases.  Leave the seedheads on the plants until late winter or spring when the dead plant material can be removed.  Plants self-seed in the right conditions, or you can grow more with fresh seed.
