Calamagrostis brachytricha or Korean Feather Reed Grass / Seeds

Korean Feather Reed Grass is an ornamental grass that grows well in borders, as edging and as a statement plant in a large pot.  Plants grow to a height of about 1m and have strong spikes of showy flowers in late summer and autumn.  The flowers are creamy white, tinged with pink and look wonderful in the garden over winter.

Calamagrostis grows best in a wide range of well drained soils.  The plants grow a clump of bright green leaves which die back in winter and resprout again from the base in spring, living for many years.  They tolerate shade and drought once established.

Pack of 100 seeds.  Sow the seeds outdoors in autumn and winter and keep in a cold-frame for germination in spring.  Or sow indoors in winter and spring, keep at room temperature and germination takes 2-4 weeks and may need 3-4 weeks of chilling in a fridge.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Height 80 - 120 cm

Sow

Sow outdoors in autumn and winter onto the surface of a tray of compost.  Leave outside in a cold frame and seeds germinate over winter and into spring.  Or sow indoors in winter to spring onto the surface of a tray of compost.  Press the seeds into the compost and do not cover the seeds.  Keep the tray at about 20°C and seedlings emerge in 2-4 weeks.  If there is no germination, move the tray into a fridge for 3-4 weeks and back into the warmth for germination.  Pot on young seedlings and plant out after hardening off.

Grow

These are deciduous plants that die back in the winter after flowering.  The flower stems are appealing over winter and can be left in place until spring when you can cut back the plant, awaiting regrowth from the base.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
