Calamagrostis emodensis / Mount Emodus Reed Grass / Seeds

An ornamental grass with creamy plumes of flowers in mid to late summer that also look wonderful in the garden over summer to winter.  Plants grow into neat clumps of linear green leaves and send up 1m spikes of flowers in mid to late summer that droop and move around pleasingly in the wind.

Calamagrostis grows best in a wide range of well drained soils.  The plants die back in winter and resprout again from the base in spring, living for many years.  They tolerate drought once established but grow best with some moisture.

Pack of 100 small seeds. Sow the seeds in autumn in a greenhouse or winter/spring indoors.  Germination is erratic so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial grass
Flowers July to December
Height 80 - 120m
Spread 50 - 80cm
Conditions  Grow in sun to part shade and well-drained soil.
Sow

Sow the seeds in autumn and overwinter the seedlings in a greenhouse.  Or sow in winter and spring indoors for planting outside in early summer.  Sow the seeds onto the surface of a tray of compost.  Press the seeds into the compost and do not cover the seeds.  Keep the tray at 15-20°C and seedlings emerge in 2-4 weeks.  Germination is erratic, so keep the seed tray going longer if necessary.  Pot on young seedlings and plant out after hardening off.

Grow

These are deciduous plants that die back in the winter after flowering.  The flower stems are appealing over winter and can be left in place until late winter/spring when you can cut back the plant, protecting regrowth from the base.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
