Calandrinia umbellata 'Ruby Tuesday' / Rock Purslane / Seeds

Rock Purslane is a great plant for hot summer borders and containers. The ‘Ruby Tuesday’ variety is a particularly good garden plant, with clusters of intense red/violet flowers from June to September.  They grow to a height of 10-20cm and are ideal for front of borders, edging and gravel and coastal gardens.

Rock Purslane grows best in full sun and well drained soil.  The plants are drought tolerant once established and grow well in pots as well as sunny borders. They are natural evergreen perennial plants that live many years in warmer UK and Mediterranean gardens.  They are often grown as annuals in the UK as they flower in the first year when grown from seed.

Pack of approx 500 seeds.  Sow spring to autumn.  Sow March to May if growing as an annual for same year flowers, otherwise you can continue sowing into early autumn, and keep the seedlings in a greenhouse for planting out the following spring.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half hardy perennial, often grown as an annual (RHS Hardiness H3)
Flowers June to September
Height 10 - 20cm
Spread 20cm
Conditions  Grow in full sun and well-drained soil.

Sow indoors in spring onto the surface of a tray of compost.  Press the seeds into the compost and do not cover.  Keep at 15-20°C and seedlings emerge in 2-3 weeks.  Pot on and grow until the plants are ready to plant out in late spring, after the last frost.  Keep sowing into early autumn for next year flowers.  Keep later sowings in a greenhouse over winter for planting out in spring.

These are evergreen plants that can be trimmed back lightly after flowering.  Plants survive in warmer gardens to live for many years.  In colder gardens, remove the plants in winter and sow more in spring.  Soft tip cuttings can be taken in late spring.
