Centaurea cyanus 'Polka Dot' / Cornflower / Semi-Tall / Seeds

The Cornflower is a classic British wildflower and a great garden plant.  This is a traditional recently revived mix of colours. Plants form flowers on strong wiry stems from June to August.  Growing to about 50cm in height, these look great in a border, grown together in groups or dotted amongst other plants in a cottage or wildflower garden.  These are good cut flowers.

Cornflowers like full sun and a rich well drained soil.  Regular feeding and water will increase flowering.

Pack of approx 600 seeds.  Sow in the autumn/winter for an early start, protecting the seedlings over winter in a coldframe or greenhouse, or sow directly in the soil in spring or autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Flowers June to August
Height 40 - 50cm
Spread 20 - 30cm
Conditions  Grow in full sun and well drained soil
Sow

Sow outdoors in spring or autumn directly in cultivated garden soil 1-2cm deep.  Or sow indoors in autumn/winter in seed trays, with a covering of compost and keep at 15-20°C.  Germination takes 10-14 days.  Protect young seedlings in a cold frame or greenhouse and plant out in the spring after hardening off.

Grow

Water regularly until young plants get established. Plants may need staking in more exposed gardens. Deadhead plants to prolong flowering.  Remove plants after they have finished flowering and sow more seed the following year.  Leave some seedheads on the plant if you want the plants to self-sow.
