Chamomile German / Matricaria recutita / Herbal Tea / Seeds

German Chamomile is mostly grown as a tasty herbal tea and medicinal plant.  Plants have a bushy structure of feathery leaves and grow to a height of 40-60cm.  There are lots of small white highly scented daisy-like flowers in summer, from June to August.  The flowers can be picked, dried and used as a herbal tea, with an appealing sweet flavour.  These plants are the most popular choice for making Chamomile tea.  German Chamomile is the source of the Chamomile Blue essential oil.

German Chamomile grows best in a sunny to part shaded position in well drained sandy soil.

Pack of approx 5000 small seeds.  Sow the seeds directly into cultivated soil in spring.   Plants will self-seed in the right conditions.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Grow in a sunny to part shaded position in well drained sandy soil.
Sow Sow the seeds in spring directly into cultivated ground.  Rake over lightly and keep moist, but not waterlogged. Germination takes 1-2 weeks, and depends on the air temperature.  Or sow into seed trays in spring.  Press the seeds into the surface of the compost, do not cover with compost and keep at 15-20°C.  Plant out into the garden after hardening off.
Grow These are trouble-free plants once established. If growing the plants for flowers, pick the flowerheads when in full bloom, and dry for a week or so before storing in a sealed container.  Remove plants in autumn once they have finished flowering.  Chamomile is a popular herbal medicinal tea.  This tea is also effective at preventing damping off of seedlings, and can be used a natural damping-off treatment in the greenhouse.
