Deschampsia cespitosa or Tufted Hair Grass / Seeds

An elegant ornamental grass with arching sprays of silvery flowers in summer, from June to September.  Plants form long-lived evergreen clumps of narrow leaves and grow to a height of 150cm when in flower.   These are spectacular plants in full flower and in winter, adding movement and drama to a garden.  They are good cut flowers.

Tufted Hair Grass grows best in sun to part shade and neutral to acidic soils.  Plants tolerate damp soils.

Pack of approx 250 small seeds.  Sow the seeds in spring and autumn.  Germination is erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Flowers June to September
Height 100 - 150cm
Spread 50 - 75cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and neutral to acidic soils
Sow

Sow the seeds indoors in spring and autumn.  Sow the seeds thinly onto the surface of a tray of compost.  Press the seeds gently in the compost, keep moist at around 20°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks, sometimes longer.  Germination is better in spring and can be erratic, so sow more than you need.  Move the seedlings into small pots when they are big enough to handle and then outside after hardening off.

Grow

Plants grow slowly and steadily and form into long-lived clumps.  These are evergreen plants, where the flower stems are generally left on the plant over winter and cut off at the base in early spring.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
