Eryngium planum / Sea Holly / Seeds

Sea Holly makes an attractive garden plant with spikey stems of metallic blue globe-shaped flowers from July to September.  Plants look best in sunny borders and especially good in gravel gardens, growing to a height of 90-120cm.  They make good fresh and dried cut flowers.

Sea Holly prefers a sunny well drained position, and can tolerate drier soils and coastal sites.

Pack of approx 250 seeds.  Sow in autumn/winter for 1st year flowers and summer/autumn for next year flowering.  Germination is erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Sow

Sow in November to January for 1st year flowers and July to September for next year flowering.  Sow on the surface of a tray of seed compost.  Do not exclude light which is needed for germination.  Keep at 15-21°C.  If there is no germination within 3-4 weeks, move to a fridge for 2-4 weeks and then to 15-21°C, when germination starts in a few weeks. Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and into the garden after the last frost in a sunny position.

Grow Seedheads can be removed after flowering or in spring, as they look attractive on the plants over winter.  Protect from winter wet by growing in a sunny situation and well drained soil.
