Eschscholzia californica ‘Carmine King’ / Californian Poppy / Seeds

A heritage variety of Californian Poppy with large lustrous pink flowers from June to September.  Plants have appealing grey-green feathery leaves and grow to about 25cm in height.  They are attractive to pollinators and may need support in exposed areas.

Californian Poppies prefer sun and poor or moderately fertile soil.  They self-seed, although the colours may change in subsequent years as the bees cross-pollinate the flowers.  Plants are tolerant of prolonged dry spells.

Pack of approx 1000.  Sow directly into prepared soil in early autumn or late spring, or early sowings can be done indoors in seed trays for planting out in late spring.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy annual (RHS Hardiness H3)
Flowers June to August/September
Height 20 - 30cm
Spread 20 - 30cm
Conditions  Full sun and poor to moderately fertile soils
Sow

Sow in autumn or spring directly in the soil, on the surface and rake over lightly.  Or sow in early spring 5mm deep in plugs/pots of seed compost and keep at room temperature.  Germination takes 1-2 weeks.  Plant out into the garden in late spring, disturbing the roots as little as possible.

Grow Deadhead plants to prolong flowering.  Remove plants in autumn after they have finished flowering.  In warmer parts of the UK the plants may live on for a few years, in which case they can be cut back to the base of feathery leaves in autumn or spring.
