Geranium pratense / Meadow Cranesbill / British Wildflower / Seeds

A handsome British wildflower, and the original plant from which so many garden varieties of hardy Geranium originate.  Plants form clumps of leaves and spikes of violet-blue flowers from June to September.  The leaves turn an attractive red in autumn.  Plants grow to a height of 30-70cm and are good for rockeries, edging and wilder areas of your garden.

Geranium pratense grows best in sun to part shade and moist well drained soil.   Plants self-seed moderately in the right conditions.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow in spring or autumn.  Germination is erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Height 30 - 70cm
Spread 30 - 60cm
Conditions  Full sun to shade and moist soil
Sow

Sow in spring or autumn.  Sow 1mm deep in a tray of seed compost, keep at 15-20°C and germination takes about two months, sometimes longer.  If there is no germination in 2 months, move the seed tray into a fridge for 3 weeks and back into the warmth and that should break seed dormancy.  Germination is erratic, so sow more seeds than you need, and do not discard the seed tray too quickly.  Transplant seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant outside after the last frost and after hardening off.

Grow Plants form clumps and need little attention once established.  Cut back plants after flowering and they will regrow a neat mound of leaves.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring and basal cuttings can be taken in spring and summer.  Plants self-seed in the right conditions.
