Gladiolus papilio / Butterfly Gladiolus / Seeds

A hardy Gladiolus well suited to UK gardens and grown here since 1866.  The Butterfly Gladiolus grows a strong fan of leaves up to 1m tall and produces funnel shaped cream to pink-green flowers in mid to late summer.  Great colour for late in the year.  A good cut flower.


Gladioli like warm, sunny and well drained conditions. Plant in groups for best effect. Mulch over winter or lift the corms once the leaves have died down, store over winter and replant in spring. 

  

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow in spring to summer. Flowering starts in the second season.  Grown in Cornwall.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Sow

Sow in spring and summer in a seed tray, cover lightly with seed compost and keep at around 20-25°C. Germination takes 2-4 weeks, sometimes up to 3 months.  Transplant seedlings into pots, grow on until the second season, and plant outside after the last frost.  Flowering generally starts in the second or third year.
Grow Plants grow in the spring, flower in summer and then die down in winter.  Corms can be left in the soil over winter in most parts of the UK in well-drained soil.  In colder areas or in not so well-drained soils, lift the corms in the autumn once the leaves have died down and store over winter.  Replant in spring.  Mature corms have off-sets which can be removed in winter when the plant is dormant and grown on into new plants.
