Helenium autumnale 'Red & Gold' / Sneezeweed / Seeds

Helenium ‘Red & Gold’ is a hot mix of yellow, orange and red flowers in mid to late summer, from July to September.  These are upright and branched perennials, growing to a height of 100-150cm.  They are wonderful border plants and excellent cut flowers, which attract pollinators into the garden. Plants look their best growing in drifts in a border and combine well with Rudbeckia, grasses and Kniphofia.

Helenium autumnale grows best in full sun to part shade and moist well drained soil.  The plants die down in winter and start growing again in spring.

Pack of approx 200 seeds.  Sow the seeds in winter and spring.  Germination is erratic so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy herbaceous perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers July to September
Height 100 - 150cm
Spread 40 - 60cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and moist well-drained soil
Sow

Sow the seeds in winter and spring into a tray of compost.  Press the seeds gently into the compost and cover very lightly with compost.  Keep the tray at 15-20°C and germination takes about 3-4 weeks but can be slow and erratic so sow more than you need.  Early sowings flower in the first year.  Transplant seedlings into small pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden after hardening off.  Pinch back the plants on transplanting to encourage a bushier form.

Grow Deadhead the plants to encourage more flowers.  Clear them back in the winter and plants start growing again in spring.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring and autumn, and basal cuttings can be taken in spring.
