Helenium hoopesii / Owl's Claws / Seeds

Heleniums are great upright border plants.  They grow a rosette of grey-green leaves and then spikes of orange-yellow flowers over a long period in the summer, from May to August.  They are wonderful border plants and excellent cut flowers, which attract pollinators into the garden.

Helenium hoopesii grows best in full sun to part shade and moist well drained soil.  The plants die down in winter and start growing again in spring.

Pack of approx 300 seeds.  Sow the seeds in spring and summer.  Germination is erratic so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy herbaceous perennial (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers May to August
Height 60 - 80cm
Spread 40 - 60cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and moist well-drained soil
Sow

Sow the seeds in spring and summer into a tray of compost.  Press the seeds gently into the compost and cover very lightly with compost.  Do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Keep the tray at 15-20°C and germination takes about 2-3 weeks but can be slow and erratic so sow more than you need.  Transplant seedlings into small pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden after hardening off.

Grow Deadhead the plants to encourage more flowers.  Cut them back in the winter and plants start growing again in spring.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring and autumn, and basal cuttings can be taken in spring.
