Kniphofia triangularis / Dwarf Red Hot Poker / Seeds

A dwarf form of Red Hot Poker with yellow-orange-red flowers in late summer and autumn.  The flower spikes come out in July or August and continue right up to the first frosts.  Plants have narrow grass-like leaves and grow to a height of about 60cm.  They are good compact plants for containers, patios, rock gardens, Mediterranean gardens and grouped together in borders.  They make good cut flowers.

Red Hot Pokers grow best in sun to part shade and moist well drained soil and attract butterflies into the garden.

Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow anytime, typically spring into summer.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial (forms rhizomes) (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers July/August to the first frost
Height 60cm
Spread 45cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and humus-rich well drained soil
Sow

Sow spring to summer on the surface of a tray of seed compost and cover thinly with compost.  Keep at 15-20°C and seedlings emerge irregularly in 2 - 6 weeks.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and plant out into the garden when frost-free in a sunny or part shaded position in well-drained soil.

Grow Plants grow new leaves in spring, flower in summer and autumn and the leaves generally die back in winter.  Remove spent flowers to encourage more flowering.  Do not remove the dead leaves until spring, as they protect the crown of the plant from excess water/freezing during winter.  Or mulch the crowns of plants in winter to protect from hard frosts.  Mature clumps can be divided in late spring.
