Kniphofia uvaria 'Royal Castle Hybrids' / Red Hot Poker / Seeds

A mix of Kniphofia hybrids with flowers in shades of red, orange and yellow.  The flower spikes come out in mid to late summer, in July to September, each lasting two to three weeks.  Plants have strap-like leaves and an upright habit, growing to a height of 80-100cm.  They look good grouped together in a border.

Red Hot Pokers grow best in sun to part shade and moist well drained soil and attract butterflies into the garden.

Pack of approx 150 seeds.  Sow the seeds indoors in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen/semi-evergreen perennial (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers July to September
Height 80-100cm
Spread 60cm
Conditions  Sun to part shade and moist humus-rich well drained soil
Sow

Sow spring to autumn on the surface of a tray of seed compost and cover thinly with compost.  Keep at 20-25°C during the day and 10-15°C at night and seedlings emerge in 2 - 4 weeks, sometimes longer.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and plant out into the garden when frost-free in a sunny or part shaded position in well-drained soil.

Grow Plants are evergreen in mild climates and lose their leaves in colder winters.  They grow new leaves in spring and then flower in summer and autumn.  Remove spent flowers to encourage more to form.  Do not remove the dead leaves until spring, as they protect the crown of the plant from excess water/freezing during winter.  Or mulch the crowns of plants in winter to protect from hard frosts.  Mature clumps of plants can be divided in spring.
