Lavender ‘Munstead’ / Lavandula angustifolia / Dwarf English Lavender / Seeds

The popular and intensely aromatic Dwarf English Lavender is a great plant for most gardens, from the herb garden to low hedging along paths, to pots and borders.  Plants have grey green leaves and lilac blue flower-heads in straight tall stalks from June to August/September.


This Munstead strain is named after Gertrude Jekyll’s garden at Munstead Wood, and grows to a height of 30-50cm.


Lavender ‘Munstead Dwarf’ thrives best in a warm sunny spot and in moderately fertile, well-drained soil.  It attracts many pollinating insects.

Sow

Sow in spring or autumn on the surface of moist seed compost and cover lightly.  Keep at 15-20°C and germination takes 3-4 weeks.  If there is not germination, move the tray to a fridge for 4-6 weeks and then back into the warmth.  Seeds sown in autumn can be left outside over winter in a coldframe, for germination from the spring onwards.  Pinch out the growing tips of seedlings once they are established to encourage a bushier habit.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle.  Protect summer/autumn sown plants over the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame, and plant out in late spring. 
Grow Plants need little care once established.  Trim back plants after flowering, removing the current year’s growth.  Do not cut back too hard into the woody parts of the plant, as stems may not regrow.  Plants are not generally troubled by pests and diseases.  Semi-ripe cuttings take easily in summer.
